Over two million Muslims from around the world gathered in Makkah for the annual Haj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam. The pilgrimage began on Friday and is expected to run until August 14th. Pilgrims arrived in the country through King Abdul Aziz International Airport and were transported to Makkah by bus. Much of the journey consisted of praying and reflecting upon their faith. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Saudi Arabia has limited the number of people attending the Haj to 60,000 residents and nationals, and only those who have been vaccinated can participate. The Haj represents one of the largest annual assemblies of people in the world.
