Astronomers have discovered a new planet that orbits two stars, just like Luke Skywalker’s fictional home planet Tatooine from “Star Wars.” The planet, named TOI-1338 c, was discovered by a high school student interning at NASA who was sorting through the data collected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The planet’s two suns, known as TOI 1338 A and TOI 1338 B, orbit each other every 15 days. TOI-1338 c is around 6.9 times larger than Earth and takes 95 Earth-days to complete one orbit around its two stars, making it a gas giant. The discovery shows that planetary systems with two stars are much more common than previously thought.
