Disney has hired Thomas Kail, the director of the Broadway hit “Hamilton,” to direct its live-action remake of “Moana.” The 2016 animated film follows the story of a young woman named Moana who embarks on a journey across the ocean to find the demigod Maui and save her island home. The live-action film will feature a new storyline, but will still embody the themes of female empowerment and cultural representation. While no release date has been announced, the film is expected to begin production in 2022.
