The report calls for preventative measures and a focus on physical therapy as a means of treatment to reduce the economic burden likely to be placed upon health systems worldwide.

A modelling study published in the Lancet Rheumatology journal has revealed that more than 840 million people worldwide will suffer from back pain by 2050. The study highlights population growth and an aging demographic as the main contributing factors behind the increase. The researchers also suggest that healthcare systems should prepare for an impending rise in demand for treatment of back pain conditions, which have been linked to significant economic burden.
