The Netherlands-based Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) has discovered five new Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), or rapidly repeating radio signals from deep space, using its recently upgraded telescope. The LOFAR is a low-frequency radio telescope equipped with 20,000 antennas that makes observing extremely faint radio waves from objects in the universe possible. These FRBs are short-lived radio wave signals, which are intense bursts of energy that come from far beyond the Milky Way galaxy. Scientists hope tracking these signals down will lead to a better understanding of the nature of the universe.
