The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced plans to launch a spacecraft towards Jupiter and three of its largest moons in 2022. The mission, named JUICE (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer), aims to learn more about the gas giant and whether any of its moons could harbor life. JUICE will carry 10 scientific instruments designed to study the moons’ geology, habitability, and potential for water, which is thought to be necessary for life. The spacecraft is expected to arrive in Jupiter’s vicinity in 2029, where it will spend three and a half years studying the planet and its moons before returning to Earth. This mission marks the first time that a European spacecraft will visit the Jovian system since the Galileo mission, which launched in 1989.
