The European Union has decided to postpone the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) till 2024. The scheme will require all non-European Union countries’ passport holders to obtain pre-screening authorisation before travelling to any country in the EU Schengen area. The move was taken in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns over potential operational disruptions. It is hoped that this delay will allow for the development of the necessary infrastructure and IT systems to ensure the successful implementation of the scheme.
