The US Air Force has stationed an unspecified number of F-22 fighters in the Northern Mariana Islands as part of Exercise Agile Reaper 23-1. The purpose of the deployment is to practise capabilities in an operationally relevant environment and develop tactics, techniques, and procedures for flying, fighting, and winning in a modern environment. The Northern Mariana Islands are strategically important for the US military in the event of a conflict, and Tinian could serve as a backup site if Guam’s infrastructure is unavailable due to a natural disaster or conflict. The US hopes that this exercise improves its capabilities and preparedness to protect the US and its allies against any prospective adversaries in the Indo-Pacific region, including China.
