The Congress Party has dealt a blow to Trinamool Congress in the by-election to Sagardighi Assembly seat in West Bengal. Congress candidate Byron Biswas won backed by the Left Front, beating both the TMC and BJP candidates. The win gave the Congress its only MLA in the current Assembly. This by-election was called after TMC’s Subrata Saha’s demise, who won the seat in the 2021 Assembly election with a huge margin of over 50,000 votes. Muslims form almost 63% of the Sagardighi population and another 10% of the voters belong to the tribal community. The win may suggest that TMC is losing the support of these minorities, and women despite its women-friendly schemes.
