She was seen crying on the roadside, with two women helping and consoling her. Wearing a hijab in public is currently mandatory for women in Iran under strict Islamic law enforced by the country’s morality police. This incident has sparked nationwide demonstrations in the country, led by young women, demanding fundamental economic, social and political reforms. Security forces have killed more than 520 people and detained over 19,000 since the protests began. The judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters.
