The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a directive to ban news channels from broadcasting terrorist attacks. The directive came after an earlier order asking TV channels to adhere to the Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015. PEMRA justified the decision by expressing that news channels violate ‘basic journalistic norms’ and ethics only to ‘take lead’ and ‘credit’ for breaking the news first. Moreover, media coverage of such incidents also gives terrorists an organisational advantage by allowing a specific group to exhibit its strength and audaciousness in comparison with its rivals. PEMRA also noted that such reports create chaos among domestic and overseas viewers arguing that such incidents give benefits to terrorists for ‘using media as a form of political advertising’ and serve their ideological purposes by ‘publicising their campaign’.
