On August 17, 2022, a meteorite crashed in two Gujarat villages and researchers have confirmed that the meteorite is an aubrite, a rare achondrite batch of meteorites. This find is significant as it could help get a clear picture of planetary processes in the future. The meteorites fell in Diyodar taluka in Gujarat and villagers collected and handed pieces to scientists from the Physical Research Laboratory. Researchers conducted reflectance spectroscopy to examine pieces of the meteor and the examination showed that the meteorite is a unique specimen of aubrite. Aubrites contain sulphides of sodium, titanium, manganese, chromium and calcium – all normal lithophiles. Over these, it also has silicon-bearing FeNi metal which share a similar highly reduced nature, unusual mineralogy, and oxygen-isotopic composition with enstatite chondrites.
