Dry eyes are one of the potential symptoms of hyperthyroidism, which occurs when the thyroid produces and releases high levels of thyroid hormone. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include a rapid heartbeat, weight loss, increased appetite and anxiety. Dry eye caused by hyperthyroidism may feel the same as dry eye caused by dry eye syndrome, but it may be different. Treatment of dry eye with hyperthyroidism includes over-the-counter eye drops, prescription steroid eye drops, and prescription oral steroids. Hyperthyroidism can be treated with antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, beta blockers, and surgery.
