Vijay Kumar Gaud, an Indian national who was missing in Turkey since the February 6 earthquake, was identified by rescuers with a tattoo of the word “Om” on one of his hands. Gaud, who hailed from Uttarakhand’s Pauri district, had gone to Turkey on January 25 for an official assignment. His face was crushed beyond recognition and his clothes were found on Friday. Gaud’s wife and son had last talked to him on the phone on February 5, and he was to return to India on February 20. Gaud’s body will first be flown to Istanbul and then taken to Delhi, and it may take three days for his body to reach Kotdwar. Meanwhile, the death toll of the earthquake that struck a border region of Turkey and Syria has surpassed 25,000, with rescue crews pulling more survivors, including entire families, from toppled buildings.
