Google dedicated a doodle to PK Rosy, a Dalit woman and Malayalam’s first female lead actor, on her 120th birth anniversary. Rosy, who was born in Thiruvananthapuram and named Rajamma by her Dalit parents, was cast in the lead role in the 1928 movie Vigathakumaran. After the movie’s premiere, spectators reportedly resented the sight of a Dalit woman playing an upper-caste character and Rosy’s house was torched. She fled from Kerala on a lorry driven by Kesava Pillai and her fate thereafter largely remained unknown until a scribe and his son set out to enquire. The tale of Rosy was retold in 2013 when Kamal’s JC Daniel biopic, ‘Celluloid’ released.
