Mason Greenwood, a 21-year-old man, has had all charges in relation to attempted rape, assault, and coercive control against him dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service and Greater Manchester Police. A CPS spokesperson said that the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant that there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction, hence the decision to drop the case. Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, Greater Manchester Police’s Head of Public Protection, said that the investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings. She also used the opportunity to reiterate GMP’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting those affected.
