After a months-long deadlock, the US and Germany have both agreed to send tanks to Ukraine in its fight against Russia after a number of requests. The US is set to send its M1 Abhram Battle tanks while Germany has agreed to send at least 12 Leopard 2 tanks. The development came after Ukraine requested new modern Western weapons, especially heavy battle tanks to help solidify its stance against Russian forces. Germany’s Leopard 2 tank is considered one of the best in the West and armies in about 20 countries have already used the equipment. The tank weighs more than 60 tonnes and is equipped with a 120 mm smoothbore gun that can hit targets at a distance of up to five km. Russia has reacted sharply to the reports and called it a ‘blatant provocation’.
